DOLPHINS

The Dolphins

We regularly see the world's largest Bottle Nose Dolphin as well as Seals and Porpoises in the waters in front of the North Kessock Hotel.

Bottlenose dolphins are well known for being intelligent and charismatic. With their curved mouths give the appearance of a friendly smile. Bottlenose dolphins can reach speeds of over 16 miles an hour and are between 10 to 14ft in length when fully grown. They are often spotted in the area as they surface to breathe, every 2 or 3 Minutes.   You might be lucky also to see the Orca whale or Pilot whales which have also been seen local in the area.

Bottlenose dolphins are very sociable and travel in pods, communicating by a complex system of squeaks and whistles.
They track their prey through the expert use of echolocation. They can make up to 1,000 clicking noises per second. These sounds travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back to their dolphin senders, revealing the location,
size, and shape of their target or meal.

Bottlenose dolphins are popular in this area as there is a heavy water flow when the tides change offering them a large meal of fish each time.
